Finding the Right Coach for Your Legal Practice
Why One-Size-Fits-All Coaching Doesn't Work For Modern Lawyers (and what works instead)
When it comes to building a modern practice, investing in a coaching experience is a great way to shorten your path to the the right opportunities.
The right coach can help you
build confidence
find traction, and
know that you’re supported in a way that respects both your profession and life beyond work.
However finding the right coach isn’t necessarily easy.
You could spend thousands on “expert” advice - only to find your practice right where you started.
The advice feels generic and tailored to your experiences;
Steers you toward mistakes you would have avoided on your own;
and could even jeopardize the future of your practice.
Case in point is this text I received from another lawyer.
The biggest danger here is not that you’re left:
out of cash
out of time, with
no return on investment.
It’s losing your confidence, momentum, and sometimes even clarity on what you actually need to move forward.
Your Success Is Too Valuable for Generic Solutions
Settling for the wrong advisor isn’t just a money problem.
Every day you operate with irrelevant, mismatched advice means another day that compounds the error of your decision; the effects of which result in:
Missing critical practice-building opportunities
Making costly errors that only a field insider would spot
Adding stress instead of clarity
Feeling more isolated as you try to adapt one-size-fits-all solutions
The Simple Solution: Choose Advisors Who Live Your World
When it comes to coaching experiences, you need someone who
“gets” your personal goals
the barriers to achieving those goals and
strategies to overcome those barriers.
Here are my thoughts on what differentiates a great coach from the rest based on my experiences:
I am very intentional about what I want to get from a coaching experience. This intention gives me a baseline to evaluate whether a relationship is working or not.
I have generally found paid coaching experiences been more valuable that free calls. For me, I like having someone to talk to on a regular basis and am willing to compensate them for their time.
The best coaching relationships have left me feeling seen, equipped, and confident in my professional and personal evolution. Today, I only work with coaches who
align with my own personal values and
are invested in my holistic success - and not just revenue.
The right advisors and coaches not only help me make faster, better decisions but also help with implementation. I’m not a fan of coaches that don’t help me implement their suggested strategies.
Choose coaches who have lived through your experiences, and can identify risks and opportunities that an outsider will never see. Shared experiences are vital to helping them identify chances and hazards you’d miss alone.
If you want your success to be sustainable, insist on strategy that makes sense for every aspect of your life—not just the bottom line.
Filter for Fit and Future Growth
Ready to reclaim confidence (and your investment) in guidance?
Here’s where to begin:
1. Apply the “Alignment Audit” before committing:
Does this advisor have first-hand experience in your precise field?
Do their philosophies support both your business and life goals—not just fast financial wins?
2. Ask the hard questions:
“How do you prevent common mistakes unique to my profession?”
“Can you share specific examples of guiding people with priorities like mine (e.g., family, wellness, long-term growth)?”
3. Insist on relevance and transparency:
Want tangible results? Avoid any mentorship that’s “industry-agnostic”.
Look for communities and programs centered on your practice, your challenges, and your aspirations.
4. Invest in systems AND support:
Leverage platforms and advisor networks (those with strategy bots, practice tools, and legal mindsets) that keep you efficient and grounded.
Remember: Choosing relevant, field-experienced advisors is the shortest route to sustainable success. This isn’t just about solving a business challenge—it’s about integrating work, family, and wellbeing so nothing gets sacrificed along the way.
Strategic clarity isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.
When the right voices are guiding your growth, you don’t just move faster—you move smarter, with your whole life in sync.
